From the borough council PR office:
Councillor Terence Aldridge, Mayor of West Lancashire, said: "The people of West Lancashire, staff and Councillors at West Lancashire Borough Council are very sad to hear the news of the death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.
"Prince Philip has been a major national figure for more than seven decades and is the longest serving consort to a British monarch. We send our condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and all of the Royal Family at this sad time.
"As a tribute to His Royal Highness, the flags on Council flagpoles will be flown at half-mast across the Borough for the eight days of national mourning.
"We have opened an online electronic book of condolence at www.westlancs.gov.uk/condolence for people living and working in the Borough to write their personal tributes and we will be holding a two-minute silence at a date and time to be confirmed."
