Skelmersdale Writers’ Group has been established in the town for fifteen years and has produced several anthologies of poetry and prose.
Their last publication – 'Then and Now, Images of Lathom House’, examined the history of Lathom House to produce creative fiction, fact and poetry covering events from the 1400s to the present day.
Now, members are embarking on a new publication comprising past and present poems about Skelmersdale.
Secretary Carol Fenlon explained: "During research I am doing into the history of Skelmersdale, I have discovered many poems written before the new town was built and also poems written about the new town from the 1960s on.
"To some extent these represent an art form detailing the town’s history and significant events through the experiences of the people who were there at the time and we feel they will make a valuable collection and addition to the town history archive."
The group is anxious to include any poems written in the past by Skemmers which families may have in their possession, composed by family members, friends, etc, and contemporary poems about the town are also wanted. Members will be contributing poems for inclusion and members of the public are invited to contribute poems of their own about their experience of living in the town.
It meets the fourth Monday of the month at Trinity Methodist Hall, High Street, Skelmersdale WN8 8AT 7-30 - 9.30 pm, and on the second Tuesday of the month meets in Skelmersdale Library 2-4 pm.
Visitors are welcome to attend any meeting; if you have a poem you would like to see in the anthology or know more about the group, contact Carol Fenlon on 07748 244711 or email carolfenlon6@gmail.com
