Were you stuck in long queues at The Fiveways junction yesterday?
OTT health and safety measures for replacing a single telegraph pole on Southport Road saw County Road reduced to one lane in both directions with mystified drivers waiting ten minutes or more to get through the junction; traffic was even busier than usual thanks to the fine weather.
There were also restrictions on Southport Road and Halsall Lane; a few selfish motorists tried to cut in at the last minute turning right towards Southport from County Road and one local takeaway driver chanced it as he returned to Dixi on Green Lane, leaving his manouvre to the last minute.
Contractors were on site for 9.30 and left around 1.30pm; hopefully complaints of poor landline reception locally are now over with.

Can you explain to me Roger why these measures were 'OTT'?
Given that a vehicle with a cherry-picker was obviously required to connect the lines back up to the new pole, and a long low-loader to bring in the new pole and take away the old one, just how do you propose that was done without any form of traffic management?
Without those 'OTT' lights as you called them, you'd have had cars trying to pull out from behind the contractors' vehicles straight into oncoming traffic, at what you know is already the most dangerous junction in the town.
Do you expect a telegraph pole will somehow just levitate up into the air and disappear, with a new one magically appearing in its place?
