Next month sees two of the biggest dates in Burscough’s calendar, with the village playing host to both the Burscough Scarecrow Festival and Burscough Duck Race.
The competitions, which will take place over the weekend 3rd and 4th of July both aim to raise money for good causes - as well as lots of smiles in the process.
Anyone can get involved whether they live in Burscough or beyond, with previous competitions attracting several international entries!
So, if you fancy getting creative and building your own scarecrow for the Burscough Scarecrow Festival then competition entries cost £5 per home, or £10 for business, schools & organisations, with trophies for the best scarecrows and profits going to local good causes. Maps will be available closer to the weekend itself for anyone who would like to take a self-guided walking, cycling or driving tour around the village to see the scarecrows, with proceeds from the sale of maps also going to local good causes.
Meanwhile, Duck Race numbers are available at £2 per duck with a 1st prize of a romantic night in a beautiful castle for two, afternoon tea, use of the spa, 3 course meal and breakfast. 2nd prize is a two-night staying in a hive at the stunning Wild Rose Park, Appleby, with £50 spending money, while 3rd prize is a two-nights staying in a pod at Wild Rose Park, Appleby, with £30 spending money.
Organisers told QLocal: “The idea behind the competitions is to raise money for ‘One Little Village’ AND one not-so-little village!
"'One Little Village' is a not-for-profit organisation supporting communities in Ghana. It’s already started work to build a school and is now working to build an snake venom antidote research centre, which will be the first of its kind in Ghana.
"All proceeds from the Burscough Duck Race will go to supporting 'One Little Village' while the Burscough Scarecrow Festival will raise money for good causes closer to home, with nominations on who should benefit being invited from those who enter.
"We had hoped to be able to add a family fun day to the line-up for the weekend, however the logistics of that have sadly proved too complex in light of the ever-changing COVID-19 situation.
"We’re really grateful, however, to everyone who had already told us that they were interested in getting involved and look forward to being able to run it at some point in the future – so it’s a ‘watch this space’ on that one!
"In the meantime, while things may look a little different this year in terms of how we run the fun as we adapt things to meet changing COVID-19 guidelines, it’s nonetheless expected that the competitions will give people a much-needed boost and also shine a light on the fabulous community spirit we have here in our village.”
To keep things COVID-safe, organisers are encouraging people to enter online this year if possible. For anyone unable to do so, paper entry forms are available from Burscough's Esquire barbers or by calling 07305 214 059.
