An inspirational Westhead disabled man's taking on a tough charity challenge to help Children In Need.

Charlie Holland has cerebral palsy - but that's never stopped him from helping others! The 58-year-old will canoe 50 miles down the Lancashire Canal from Stainton near Kendal through Lancaster and Garstang.

He has significant mobility problems, walks with a frame and receives treatment from the Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy team who are helping him prepare physically and mentally for his big challenge.

Charlie said: “I may be disabled with cerebral palsy and mobility issues but that will not stop me.

"I’ve faced many challenges in my life but now my challenge is to ask people to support me. All donations will be going to the BBC’s Children In Need appeal and together we can make a difference.

"Children and young people are in need in many ways and we can all help.

    "Every penny counts!”

This isn’t the first major charity challenge Charlie has done. In 2000 he climbed the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis in Scotland, to raise money for his local school, Westhead Lathom St James’ CE Primary.

His friend, Shane O’Reilly, said: “Children In Need is very important to Charlie, who dismisses his disabilities and thinks of others constantly.

"He is aware that many people don’t have a good start in life but he wants to make a difference for them.

“Charlie is an exceptional person. Despite his disabilities and limitations he is determined to help others.

"He has been training for this event since early May and has found Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy’s help invaluable. It’s also important that he maintains his iron levels, has stamina and prepares well for the event and Burscough have assisted Charlie in all of this.”

Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy clinical director Jack Moulton said: “Charlie is a remarkable person and a real inspiration to us all here at the practice.

"We have been working with Charlie for the past three years to help improve and maintain his current level of mobility and independence.

“What Charlie is doing shows how neuro physiotherapy can transform people’s lives, giving them the skills and strength to do things they may otherwise have thought were impossible.”

The challenge starts on Saturday, August 20 and is expected to take five days. Charlie is being supported by West Lancashire Explorer Scouts and SPLASHU, a team of scouts who specialise in water experiences.

He'll have at least one other canoe in the water with him at all times to ensure he is safe, along with two land teams. Explorer Scouts will walk the canal path, collecting support as they go and there'll also be a team getting supplies and setting up rest stops with Charlie staying at scout huts along the way.
