“Spare an hour or so on Saturday 20th July to help tidy Ormskirk Parish Churchyard” – that’s the appeal going out to local residents to help with a Community Action Day in the graveyard at the town’s 12th century parish church.
Our West Lancashire is working with the parish church and local residents to improve the section of the graveyard where children are buried.
Adrian Owens, a local Ormskirk councillor said: “A local ward resident whose young child is buried in the church graveyard, wrote to me distressed about the maintenance standards in the graveyard.
"Clearly the parish has huge expenses with the upkeep of the historic building and so the funds available for the churchyard are limited.
The aim of the day is to supplement the maintenance that the parish already puts in.”
Rev Pauline Bicknell, Priest-in-Charge at the 12th century church said, “As a church we are keen to make sure the graveyard is kept to the best possible condition. This is particularly true for the baby graves. But as this is a big challenge, for a church with limited resources, we are delighted to partner with the community to bring this area up to a standard. I look forward to welcoming people and seeing the improvement to this important part of the church.”
The action day will start at 11am on Saturday 20th July and finish around 12.30pm. All volunteers are welcome as this is a community effort. Gloves and garden tools will be provided, but if volunteers have gloves or tools then they should bring them along. Refreshments for volunteers will be available in the Tower Room of the Parish Church. Prospective volunteers should telephone 01695 351361 or emailoffice@ourwestlancashire.com for planning purposes.
