The miscreants were almost certainly out shooting pheasants or pigeon. IF they shot an opportunistic hare, it would definitely be destined "for the pot."
Hare is delicious. And they are in season.
And they will have led a far better life than the creatures that were destined for McDonalds or the creatures that underwent LD50 tests for the make up that complainant paid for and is currently wearing.

Why do you assume that McDonalds animals are mistreated? Here's a quote from the McDonalds web site

'We're proud to work with over 16,000 British and Irish farmers who supply the beef on our UK menu and we think you'd approve of them too. They look after their animals and are all approved by a nationally recognised farm assurance scheme, such as Red Tractor.'
