Ormskirk won the toss and elected to field - and just as play was about to start the heavens opened causing a delay of over half an hour to the first ball being bowled.

The Ormskirk bowlers started well claiming two wickets with 57 runs on the board. Zahir Shehzad trapped Nathan Hughes (lbw) and Sam Marsh had Subbaan Mahmood (6) caught behind by Gary Knight. From then on it was down hill for the bowling attack as Ben Walkden and Rizwan Haider took charge and put on a stand of 111 for the 3rd wicket before Haider (64) was bowled by Sam Marsh.

Another stand of 63 runs for the 4th wicket was shared by Walkden and Chris Chambers. The partnership came to an end when Chambers (34) was caught by Scott Lees off the bowling of Harvey Rankin.

All eyes were now on Ben Walkden who at the loss of his partner needed just 4 runs to reach the century mark, which, to his delight and that of the home supporters, he did and went on to make an undefeated 107. In the 54th over the innings closed on 243 - 5, having lost one more wicket when Dominic Chambers (1) was stumped to give Zahir Shehzad his second wicket.

The Ormskirk reply started with a 1st wicket partnership of 26 between George Politis and Alex Rankin. At the loss of the first wicket, when Alex Rankin (7) was caught, wickets started to tumble and very quickly the score plummeted to 74-5. George Politis (21) was caught, Robert Rankin (14) was bowled, Gary Knight (0) was bowled and John Armstrong (5) was caught.

Ormskirk needed a hero and they found one in Harvey Rankin who came in at the loss of the 4th wicket. He stuck to the task with great resolve and remained unperturbed as wickets continued to fall, punishing any loose deliveries and defending any dangerous ones.
During his innings he lost four partners in Robert Rankin (14) Ian Robinson (14), Sam Marsh (5) and Zahir Shehzad (0) before being joined by Scott Lees with the score on 137-8 and a heavy defeat the likely outcome.

There was drama and controversy with only 6 overs left when the weather took centre stage. A sun shower broke out and the umpires took the players off. The Newton le Willows players understandably showed their frustration and forcefully argued, to no avail, for play to continue. The interruption lasted six minutes and as a result left the bowlers only 4 instead of 6 overs to claim the last two wickets and victory.

It was a nervy last 4 overs as the fielders crowded the bat in a desperate attempt to get the two wickets they wanted. “Hero Rankin” (64*), ably partnered by Scott Lees (11*), held out under tremendous pressure and the game ended in a draw.
