NHS leaders in West Lancashire are seeking to introduce a new community-based dermatology (skin) service for local patients.

To do this, commissioners at NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) would like to hear from patients who have used local dermatology services.

There are hundreds of dermatological diseases, but the most common ones include eczema, psoriasis, suspected skin cancer, acne, urticaria, rosacea, infections/infestations, leg ulcers and stasis eczema, lichen planus and drug rashes.

The CCG is currently inviting potential providers to take part in a procurement process and co-design this new dermatology service with them, alongside local patients and carers. This service will be available to all ages.

Carol McCabrey, service redesign manager of NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said:“Skin disease is common and very distressing for the individuals involved, sometimes causing both pain and disruption to their day to day lives. Patients in West Lancashire requiring dermatology services are currently having to visit hospital for treatment as there is no community-based service closer to their homes”.

The commissioners are aiming for this new service to improve the health of their population, to offer high quality care for patients, a sophisticated triage system that involves technology and maximise minor surgery skills available in GP practices.

Mike Maguire, chief officer of NHS West Lancashire CCG added:“Technology will be a fundamental element of this service and will transform the way we look after dermatology patients in the future. We plan to utilise up to date technology at GP practice level such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality surgery, as well as using innovative tools such as 3D teledermatology to assist further with diagnosis and treatment.

To create a new service that is truly co designed, we would like to ensure patients with dermatology experiences have had the opportunity to share their views with us. If anyone would like to offer their views and be involved in this process, we would like to hear from you. We would especially be interested to hear from parents and their children about their joint experiences.”

If patients (including young people) and carers living in West Lancashire have experience of any dermatological diseases and would like to be involved in creating the new look service, please get in touch with the CCG via wlccg.myview@nhs.net or 01695 588 203.
