Ormskirk hospital's been 'named and shamed' as one with the worst results for routine surgery as new league tables comparing the success of hip operations
are revealed.

Research on 430 hospitals across the UK reveals 10 which are significantly more likely to require operations to be repeated, over the past five years.

Those with the worst results said high levels of infection after surgery, and inadequate supervision of junior doctors were among the reasons for their poor performance.

Others said their results were worse than others because the patients they treated were more likely to be frail or elderly.

The analysis examined all 145 NHS trusts running 250 hospitals in the UK, as well as 181 private hospitals, which provide data to the National Joint Registry.

In total, 10 - six NHS hospitals and four private hospitals - were “outliers” - meaning their results were significantly worse than their peers - for the percentage of hip operations requiring repeat surgery, in the last five years.
