Residents and visitors will see Ormskirk looking even more attractive with two important improvement schemes being planned by the Borough Council.Works are proposed for Moor Street which would complement previous schemes carried out on this important gateway into the town, while new paving and seating is planned for the Railway Road end of Moor Street to match that installed on the rest of the pedestrianised area.
And street furniture will also be re-configured to allow more room for stalls for the ever popular Ormskirk Market which takes place every Thursday and Saturday. The proposed scheme for Wheatsheaf Walks would enhance the paved and seating space within the complex so it is more welcoming and have better access for disabled people.
There are two suggestions for this scheme, one which retains the pagoda structure and one which sees it removed which may give a more open feel to the area, giving greater visibility to the shops and making it a more useable space.New paving would be laid to match that on Moor Street and make the area more attractive as people come into town from the car park behind the Court Leet.
New seating and lighting is also proposed to make the place comfortable for shoppers and visitors to take a break there.Consultations on both schemes, which will enable the public, affected businesses and other stakeholders to give comments, are planned to start in the week beginning Monday 5 August; further details of the consultation arrangements will be published in advance on the Council's website.
Site construction works on the schemes selected is expected to start early in 2020 subject to all necessary scheme design/approval and procurement details being satisfactorily completed in advance of this timeframe.
Councillor Ian Moran, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council and portfolio holder for Economic Regeneration, said: "These exciting schemes will make a big difference to Ormskirk town centre and make it more attractive to shoppers, visitors and residents. It also helps to meet the aims of the Ormskirk Town Centre Strategy, that the Council is delivering with partners in the Town Centre Management Group, to ensure Ormskirk has an even brighter and more successful future."
