Ormskirk slumped to their third successive defeat, in a rain interrupted game, on Saturday when they visited Northern CC in the final round-robin fixture of the Restart Competition.

Ormskirk won the toss and elected to bat with the Rankin brothers, Alex and Robert, opening the innings. 16 runs were on the board when Robert was bowled by Tomas Sephton to bring in Tyler McGladdery to join Alex.

The new partnership put on 30 runs until Tyler McGladdery lost his wicket in somewhat unfortunate circumstances. Going for what was a simple run he slipped and fell to be stranded in the middle of the wicket and do nothing but watch his run out by Daniel Haughton having scored 16 runs to leave the score on 46-2.

Another 21 runs were added for the third wicket in a brief partnership between Alex Rankin and Gary Knight. Losing concentration, when he was going well, Alex Rankin (36) offered a simple catch to Liam Grey off the bowling of Justin Snow.
The run rate was lamentably slow and in an effort to push things along Gary Knight (19) picked the wrong ball to attack and was caught behind to leave the score at 81-4 and new partnership of John Armstrong and George Politis.

This proved to be the best partnership of the innings putting on 46 valuable runs. The run rate was still uncomfortably low but both batsmen looked to be in control with a reasonable expectation while that they were there a target approaching 190 could be possible. That expectation came to an end when John Armstrong (26) lost his wicket to a catch behind, to leave the score on 127-5.

George Politis (19) had hardly put a foot wrong when in an effort to force the pace fell to a catch by Taylor Cornell off the bowling of Liam Grey to see the sixth wicket go down with the score at 133.

It was left to Scott Lees (13*) and Nicky Caunce (13*) to play out the final overs. Their partnership added 22 valuable runs to see the innings close on 155-6.
In reply, Northern needed to score at a rate of almost four runs an over. Their first wicket partnership between Taylor Cornell (23) and Liam Grey put on 57 runs with Jamie Barnes making the first breakthrough when he took the wicket of Taylor Cornell.

Liam Grey looked to be in good form and enjoyed partnerships of 14 and 31 with Jonny Brown (2) and Andrew Clarke (19)

It was just after the fall of the 3rd wicket that the rain came and play was halted.
On resumption of play a revised target of 146 was set for a Northern win and this was comfortably met with Liam Grey still at the crease with 65 runs to his name.

Comparisons of both teams’ statistics shows that Northern were overall the better team on the day. When bowling they conceded only 9 extras against the 22 conceded by Ormskirk, while in the batting department, they scored 12 boundaries (eleven 4s and one six) against Ormskirk’s 7 boundaries.

In limited overs cricket, big hitting and tight bowling are crucial to success and Northern came out on top in both departments.

From the Ormskirk point of view heart could be taken particularly from the sound performance with the bat of teenager George Politis and the fact that all is not lost in the competition. There is the semi-final next week away to Formby and depending on the result of that game a final tie that would be played away.

In any event, the were will no more home team fixtures for the Ormskirk First XI this season.
