    Report: Brian Brighouse

As we approach the halfway stage of the season, the Bridge have a six-point lead at the top of the Ormskirk & District Pool League.

They have amassed 65 points from the 11 matches they have played, this time around they beat their compatriots, the Bridge Dogs, by 5 games to two. The result sees the ‘Dogs’ slip to 8th with 46 points.

Their nearest challengers, the Stanley Club, had an impressive 6 – 1 victory over last seasons champions, Bar 22. Bar 22 are now 16 points behind the leaders having played the same number of matches, it will take a Herculean effort from the Bar 22 outfit if they are to retain their trophy.

Although the Queen Inn find themselves 7 points behind the Bridge, the 2018/19 champions do have a match in hand of the two teams above them. Indeed, only two teams have only played 10 matches so far, the other being La Cantina.

This time the ‘Inn’ beat the Pinewoods by 5 frames to 2.
La Cantina A kept up the pressures on the leaders by taking maximum points from their local rivals, the aforementioned La Cantina, in the Southport Road derby.

The ‘A Team’ sit in 4th spot with 57 points from their 11 matches.
Unfortunately, our new website has had a few glitches in this our first season, in particular teams are having a long run without a home match.

The Railway seem to have benefitted from their first home tie for a few weeks, this week they beat Shaw Hall by 5 games to 2.
In the final match of the week Whittakers, beat the Farmers by the odd frame.

The Farmers are in a small group of teams that have played 12 matches, so although they sit in 6th with 48 points Whittakers are just two points adrift with a game in hand on the Farmers.

That concludes league matches for 2019, over the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on the league cup; this time around it's being played in a champions league style format, 4 teams will progress from the 4 groups to the semi-finals.

As previously reported the new website does not provide us with an easy view on who leads the race for player of the year, as filtering by the requirement to have played 75% of available fixtures also takes into account pairs matches. In fact, only 19 players in the league meet that criteria, if we did have such a trophy David Taylor (Bridge) leads the way with 13 wins (72.22%).
The other factor to take into account is the qualifying condition, so for teams who have played 12 matches an individual must have played singles in 9.

For teams who have played 11 that becomes 9 and for 10 its 8. Taking all that into account the leader is Martin Gallego (Stanley Club), Martin has won 8 (83.33%) of the 9 matches he has played.
