Report: Brian Brighouse
After six rounds of matches just one point separates the top 4 teams at the top of the Ormskirk and District Pool League.
Last season’s Cup Winners and League runners-up, The Bridge lead the pack on 33 points following their victory by 4(5) – 3 over the Farmers; the Farmers are in 8th spot some 9 points off the pace.
It was a bad day at the office for last week’s leaders La Cantina A as they lost at home 5(6) -2 to the Railway. La Cantina though are one of the 3 teams on 32 points while the Railway have 21 points and currently occupy 10th spot.T
he Queen Inn travelled to Formby and came away with a 6-(7) – 1 victory over the Pinewoods this resulted in them also sitting on 32 points. The other team on 32 points are the Stanley Club, this time around they beat Shaw Hall Caravan Park 5(6) – 2,The Bridge Dogs continued their excellent start to the season, this time around they beat last season’s runaway champions Bar 22 5(6) -2.
The ‘Dogs’ are just three points behind the leaders at this early stage while the ‘champions’ are six points off the pace in 6th.
Whittakers continue to rise up the table after a 5(6) – 2 win away at Shaw Hall A, the former 22 Club team sit in 7th on 26 points. In the final match off the week La Cantina came away from the Eureka with an excellent 6(7) -1 victory.
Three players have won all 4 games played and therefore lead the early challenge for player of the year, the 3 are Martin Gallego (Stanley Club), Adam Pearce (Queen Inn) and Harry White (La Cantina A).
Our new league website also allows us to look at stats for doubles matches and we will be asking the league committee to consider adding this as an award category this time around. Brian Salters and Sean Brogan (both from La Cantina) lead the way with 3 wins out of 3.The preliminary round of the pools singles has now concluded and I am pleased to report the majority of ties took place despite players being required to arrange them outside the league programme.
The next round is due to be played on Wednesday 23rd October.
