The Ormskirk Quiz League has just begun its 50th season.
In 1970 three teams, two from Burscough, Red Lion and Royal, together with Golden Lion from Rainford - who played in the Southport League - were joined by seven new teams to form the Ormskirk League.
And the number of teams doubled in the following season when the League split into two equal divisions, East and West.
In 1972 Divisions 1 and 2 based on merit, with promotion and relegation were introduced, and this continues to the present day - there are currently 19 teams, from a peak of 31 in the early 1990s.
Two current teams, Helenians and Whippet played in the first season as Rainford and Queen Inn. They were joined in the second season by Ormskirk (Young) Farmers.
As well as regular league matches there are opportunities for teams to play in a knockout and a Charity League, and there's also an individual competition, while Ormskirk players and teams compete against those from the other four constituent leagues which make up the Merseyside Quiz Leagues.
A season opener saw the Ormskirk President's Trophy (representative) team, pictured with 'Egghead' Pat Gibson on the left, play against a guest team of broadcast winners including 'Egghead' Barry Simmons (in the red jacket).
And t
he five gentlemen standing are all current players who have played since the early 1970s, including John Hesketh (second left) who played in the first season. The three on the right all still play for Ormskirk Farmers.
