MP Rosie Cooper's welcomed news of government funding for West Lancashire Borough Council to support Ormskirk town centre.
She'd contacted the authority encouraging them to make a bid to the scheme for Ormskirk town centre as it met the criteria including being in a conservation area.
She had become aware of £44m of Government and Historic England funding to create new 'High Streets Heritage Action Zones', giving councils, businesses and community groups access to expert advice and investment to bring historic buildings back into use and support historic high streets to adapt the challenges they face, something she felt would help the ailing town centre.
There is also a further £3m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support a cultural programme to engage people in the life and history of their high streets, and £15m for the Architectural Heritage Fund to support social enterprise organisations to take ownership of and bring buildings of local importance such as pubs, libraries, theatres and shops back into use.
Said Rosie: “This is a great boost for Ormskirk and West Lancashire and I hope that the council can use this opportunity and really drive investment and retailers into Ormskirk with spin off benefits for the rest of West Lancashire.
“The funding for Ormskirk comes at an opportune time to regenerate our town centres, with the multi million pound Skelmersdale town centre development due to begin in the coming months – the sooner residents can see diggers on site there, the sooner they can believe in the long overdue Skelmersdale town centre delivery.
“Securing funding through Historic England will help ensure investment and protections are put in place to maintain Ormskirk’s historic nature and many of its remaining buildings of historic importance to the town.”

Conservation area, I remember now, we had one of those in Ormskirk at one time however long gone now under the relentless needs of Edge Hill, still the extra money will come in handy to pay for even more pointless public consultations organised by this lack lustre Council.

Yawn... Is there anything Reevsy that you won't try to criticise Edge Hill for? Can you not see ANY benefits that Edge Hill brings to Ormskirk?
Take the recent redevelopment / reopening of the Buck Ith Vine (one of the most historic buildings in town) and the Spitroast restaurant. A big part of that application was the provision of student accommodation upstairs, making the development financially viable. Without that, the renovation may never have happened, leaving the pub derelict.
