Can’t find a job?
Meet Pat Wallbank who at 64 has two great jobs which she thoroughly enjoys.
The story started 16 years ago when Pat wanted a job to get herself out of the house, applied for two - and got them both in the same week!Lollipop lady and cleaner are her roles and she excels at them both.
Faced with having to choose between the two, Pat realised that it would be possible to do both - her cleaning job with Poppies fits comfortably and flexibly inside the school run/lollipop times.
Pat takes up the story about her role as a Lollipop Lady, telling QLocal: "The job requires common sense, an eye test and respect from both myself, the parents and children I help. The youngsters do as they are told and I am grateful that I have the backing of the parents who instill in their children that I am there to help.
“One thing that made me smile recently is a child who’s mum I used to help cross the road when I first started 16 years ago.”
Favourite vehicles?
Pat responded: “It has to be lorry drivers who totally respect the crossing. I once almost finished up in the bucket of a digger when he drove a bit too close but thankfully I spotted him before being scooped up!”
How did Poppies come about?
Explained Pat: “I applied for the job and Chris Wootton who owned the Ormskirk business invited me for an interview. I start my cleaning jobs straight after the school duties and it’s a smooth changeover. I have seen the Poppies business grow and prosper over the last 16 years and now Chris owns the whole business in the UK and deserves to do well.”
She concluded: “I have the best two jobs anyone could wish for!
"In both roles, I meet people and get to help people, get plenty of fresh air and even the snow, ice and rain in the winter won't deter me. There is no age limit on what I do and I want to carry on as long as I possibly can.”
Said Chris: “Pat really is a treasure – her commitment to 'her children' is matched with that to her Poppies clients – long may this continue.”
