To use a football analogy, Aughton’s game away at Birkenhead St Mary’s next Saturday is a relegation 6 pointer following Aughton’s latest defeat at New Victoria CC.
Again skipper Andy Barnes lost the toss and Aughton were inserted; the Greens got off to a good start with a season highest opening partnership of 42 between Harnick and Parkinson in 14 overs.
In form Waterhouse then entered the fray and found support from other batsman as Aughton finished on 159 for 5 from their 40 overs with Oakford getting 22 and the elder of the Barnes brothers Graeme finishing unbeaten on 24 with Waterhouse 59 not out.
G Barnes not for the first time this season has stepped up with the bat showing that even a blind squirrel finds the odd nut. He must be pushing his brother the captain hard for a promotion in the batting order in weeks to come.
There was some light relief during the Aughton innings where an Aughton batsman entered the field wearing his jumper the wrong way round - not to worry though as his jumper was pointing the right way back to the pavilion and he was dismissed in short order.
Captain Barnes quite rightly tried something different with the new ball at the start of the New Vic innings. He took responsibility himself with off spinner Waterhouse. Unfortunately the result was the same with Veteran trundler Gary Taylor replacing Waterhouse after 6 overs. Truth be told though Aughton’s battery of right arm medium pacers were no match for the New Vic batsman especially Hawksworth who scored 117 not out with the handy skill of avoiding the fielders with his aerial drives.
New Vic got over the line in the 23rd over, Carbery the pick of the bowlers in the 9 wicket defeat.
Aughton did pick up 8 useful batting points and move onto Birkenhead next week with the added bonus of the return of players from injury and unavailability.
