The Borough Council's Cabinet has decided to cease work on the current Local Plan Review with immediate effect to give the authority more time to consider the best proposals for the future of West Lancashire.
As a result, the Local Plan Review Preferred Options for a Local Plan to 2050 consulted upon in Autumn last year have effectively been withdrawn.
Instead, the Cabinet decision, made at is meeting on Tuesday 10 September, will involve creating of a new Local Plan Cabinet Working Group to help the Council prepare a new 15-year Local Plan for the Borough.
The Borough Council needs to ensure it has an up-to-date Local Plan so we can meet essential community needs such as having enough land allocated for housing and employment. If we don't do this then the authority is less likely to be able to refuse planning applications for such development in inappropriate locations.
In its preparation of a new 15-year Local Plan the Council will refresh the evidence base needed to establish the Borough wide requirement for housing and employment land and the most appropriate locations for the allocation of land to meet those needs.
Councillor David Evans, portfolio holder for Planning, said: "We have listened to feedback through the public consultation we held on the Local Plan Review proposals. The proposals have now been withdrawn to give us more time to consider the best way forward as we look to draw up a Plan to give West Lancashire the best possible future."
The Cabinet decision is subject to call in from members of the Executive Overview and Scrutiny Committee in case its members want to consider it. The call in period lasts until 5pm on Tuesday 17 September. If this item is called in no action will be taken on this item until after it has been considered by the Executive Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Thursday 26 September.
