A talented businesswoman who founded a famous Ormskirk fancy dress business has died.
Pauline McKittrick, 89, was well known by many in west Lancashire and Liverpool for her inspirational work ethic after founding 'Aladdin's Cave'.
She started her working life in Nanette’s in Bold Street, Liverpool where she made numerous wedding dresses, and reputedly enabled it to be the first in the city to have a copy of Princess Margaret’s own dress – the day after the Royal wedding!
Pauline began her fancy dress business working out of her own front room on Highfield Road, Ormskirk but prompted by many visitors - including Liverpool FC players- the venture quickly expanded into her first premises off Church Street.
She had a remarkable ability to see any outfit and cut and sew without pattern making, a skill which enabled her to keep pace with emerging trends started by many pop and film stars of the time.
Pauline moved premises three times, continuing to expand her stock, and supply local businesses for charity events and fund raising, along with many amateur dramatic groups and the hundreds of individuals and businesses who required outfits for themed parties.
Her daughter, Colette Giblin, said: “It’s appropriate that while celebrating International Women’s Day we acknowledge the part that inspirational female entrepreneurs like Pauline and the creation of Aladdin’s Cave played in the change of perceptions of women in business and society.”
Her funeral will be next Friday lunchtime at St Anne’s, Ormskirk.
