Report: Brian Brighouse
After four rounds of matches in the Ormskirk & District Pool League three teams have 23 points, La Cantina A, the Bridge and the Stanley Club.
La Cantina A recorded a 5(6) -2 win over the Farmers while the Stanley Club came away from Pinewoods with a similar result.
The battle of the bridge ended with the Bridge Dogs beating their compatriots, the Bridge, by the odd game, while The Queen Inn kept up the pressure on the leaders as they came away from the Eureka with a 4(5) - 3 victory. The ‘Inn’ (the 2017/18 league winners) have 22 points from their four games.
Last seasons champions, Bar 22, sit four points off the pace after beating La Cantina by the odd frame at their Moorgate home; Whitakers (the former 22 Club team and inaugural winners of our league) are a point behind after beating Shaw Hall Caravan Park by the odd game.
In the final match of the round the Railway came away from Shaw Hall A with a solid 5(6) – 2 victory.
It’s early days but it doesn’t look like any team's going to run away with the league title this year, only seven points separating the top eight teams. And it’s also early days in the race for player of the year, but it's worthy of note that Martin Gallego (Stanley Club), Sam Hart (Railway), Andy McDonnell (Farmers) and Adam Pearce (Queen Inn) have won all four of the singles matches they have played so far.
