Leigh won the toss and elected to bat.

Ryan Maddock and Nicky Caunce opened the bowling and soon had the home team in trouble with the first three batsmen back in the pavilion with only 16 runs on the board. When Scott Lees was brought into the attack he took the wicket of the Leigh captain Tom Foster (16) with his first ball, having him superbly caught behind the stumps by Gary Knight.

With the score at 52-5 things did not get much better for Leigh as just 6 runs later Tom Hartley came into the action to get his first wicket when he had Adam Shallcross (18) caught by Ryan Maddock.

And with the score on 58-6 Leigh were in deep trouble with worse to come as Jamie Barnes joined the action when he took his first wicket by having Toby Bulcock (16) caught by Tom Hartley. Barnes and Hartley gave the batsmen no respite and, after 34 overs and 45 minutes before the tea interval was due, Leigh were all out for a paltry 84 runs.

Rankin brothers, Alex and Robert, opened in reply for Ormskirk and put on 14 runs before Robert (12) fell to a catch behind the wicket to bring in Tyler McGladdery. The new partnership had put on 23 runs when Alex (13) lost his wicket to a catch and with the score on 37-2 tea was taken.

After the tea interval the new partnership of Tyler McGladdery and George Lavelle took the score to 51 when McGladdery (21) lost his wicket. A batting collapse followed and, within the space of six overs, the score plumetted to 79-7 with the loss of George Lavelle (5), Gary Knight (2), John Armstrong (7) and Tom Hartley (11). With the succession of dismissals the Leigh team gained heart and a shock victory was within their grasp. They were not, however, to get their fairy-tale ending as Ryan Maddock (8*) and Nicky Caunce (4*) survived the intense pressure that Leigh applied. It was with great relief Nicky Caunce hit the winning runs, in typical style, with a fine drive to the boundary.

What should have been a ‘stroll in the park’ turned out to be a struggle but, nevertheless, it was a win that yielded a maximum 25 league points
