Following the success of the local motorcycle nuisance campaign in West Lancashire, a force wide operation has been rolled out to address the illegal and nuisance use of off-road motorbikes, scrambler bikes and quad bikes across the region.
Codenamed Operation Rider, as it will be known in West Lancashire, it will allow the force to have a consistent approach to motorcycle nuisance, and will see officers patrolling areas which residents have already highlighted as an area of concern, including cycle tracks, housing estates, wasteland and industrial estates. They will utilise a range of powers to seize any bikes that are being used illegally - and prosecute those committing offences.
As part of the operation, a dedicated email address has been set up and officers are asking the public to report any anti-social activity or nuisance riders to Oprider@lancashire.pnn.police.uk. Reports can also be made online to lancashire.police.uk/reportonline, via 101 – or, if there is an imminent danger, 999 should be dialled.
Geographic Inspector Ellie Kanoun said: “We have been operating a successful motorcycle hotline for some time, however it has become apparent that it is now not just a local issue but countywide and therefore we will also be working with partners to combat this.
“We will collate and examine any information sent to us and treat it with confidence. People can also submit photographs, but we must stress that images should only ever be taken if it is safe to do so.”
Education will also play a key part in the countywide motorcycle nuisance campaign. Signage has been produced informing of the Section 59 Police Reform Act, enabling bikes to be seized if ridden in an antisocial or dangerous way. There will also be an educational leaflet aimed at parents giving advice around bike safety and potential offences plus a social media campaign.
