It's been a difficult period recently In the history of Aughton Cricket Club with an aging and shrinking playing squad, then faulty machinery meaning Aughton had to concede the previous week’s fixture vs Moss Side Maghull.
So at least Aughton managed to field a side in this Saturday's away fixture at Dalton Cricket Club but unfortunately it was a familiar tale of woe.
As seems to be the norm Aughton lost the toss and Dalton asked the away side to endure the 30 degree Beacon sun and bowl first.
Carbery was standing in for club captain Barnes (who is rumoured to be in rehab) had displayed good leadership skills in Aughton’s last victory at Burscough but also had to keep wicket with regular keeper Matt Parkinson on the last week of his summer holidays.
Carbery keeping wicket meant Aughton were a bowler light so it came as a blow when leading wicket taker Gary Taylor had to be removed from the attack. ‘Struthonian’ Taylor’s persistent no ball problem resulted in the medium pacers removal from the attack after just 4 of his allotted overs conceding 23.
Thankfully Shankar steadied the ship with 1 for 36. Dalton’s star man though was Charman who scored 95 and was unlucky not to score a century before Aughton’s best bowler, left arm quickie Woods dismissed him and finished with a credible 3 for 30 and was supported well by Sanjeev Jha and G Barnes with a wicket apiece.
Dalton’s final total of 193 for 9 was always going to prove a tough ask for an Aughton side who were missing their leading batsman.
This proved the case with Aughton being dismissed for just 59 in 21 overs. Only Woods showed any real quality with captain Carbery being the only other player to join him in double figures.
A comical run out concluded the innings and Aughton picked up 4 bonus points to keep them above the drop zone for now at least. Dalton won by 134 runs.
A light hearted moment in the Dalton heat as the curtain came down on the match were the pantomime boos for ‘no ball’ villain Taylor who took it in good spirit.
Aughton travel to Aigburth next Saturday.
