Two staff from Santander, Ormskirk 'discovered' a brilliant charity in Skelmersdale - as they gave it a £5000 'Discovery' grant.
Natalie Davis, branch manager (right) and cashier Gill Petherick are pictured with Jocelyn Owens who set up Family Forge which assists asylum seekers and refugees in Skem., Ormskirk and Burscough integrate into local life.
"We had a brilliant time at the charity and were very impressed by what it's doing. It was a privilege to visit the staff and support their important work," said Natalie.
The folk Family Forge works with have been dispersed from the Liverpool region by the Home Office; Santander's Ormskirk Branch is among other local benefactors in supporting Family Forge which provides language support and integration activities for the men and women.
The £5000 from Santander's 'Discovery' fund is specifically for the charity's 'Language for the workplace' project which aims at focussing minds on the long term goal of employment. Practically, it means help in learning how to write formal letters and emails, to write CVs and make job applications.
“One of our most effective projects is our driving theory support classes,” Jocelyn told QLocal after last Monday's presentation at its Sandy Lane offices in old Skem.
“Many refugees have been inspired and assisted to gain an English driving license, tests for which must be taken in the English language.
"This is a challenge but with extra support to learn the specialised vocabulary many have gone on to successfully pass.”
The centre has recently purchased LGV and PCV test resources to take this work to the next level - anyone wishing to support these or other Family Forge projects should email info@familyforge.com
