Problems with the water supply to Ormskirk School saw pupils finish for half term earlier than planned yesterday afternoon.
Many were seen in and around town making for home from around 1pm as United Utilities were called to deal with the issue which affected drinking water supply.
The school apologised for any inconvenience the early closure might cause but reiterated their priority was the safety of pupils.
An official statement read: "Due to an unknown reason beyond our control we currently have no water or gas in school.
"For hygiene reasons we have been forced to close the school immediately.
"We have asked the school buses to come early.
"If there are any children who cannot get home we will ensure they are safe and keep them in school until we know they can get home safely.
"We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused but we must prioritise our pupils' health and safety."
