On a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon in Crosby, the strangest of all cricket seasons came to an end with Ormskirk suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Northern CC.

It was not surprising as, in both their two previous meetings, Northern had proved to be the stronger side and any other result would have upset the odds.

Ormskirk won the toss and elected to bat but were soon in trouble losing the wickets of Alex Rankin (3) and Sam Marsh (10) with only 14 runs on the board.

A partnership of 47 runs developed between Tyler McGladdery and Gary Knight for the third wicket which was broken when McGladdery (27) was bowled. The dismissal brought John Armstrong to the wicket. The new partnership had produced only seven runs when Armstrong was caught to leave the score 68-4.

George Politis (0) was the next to lose his wicket without facing a ball. Having taken up his position at the non-striker’s end, Knight played what would seemed to have been a defensive stroke and, due to some misunderstanding, Politis tentatively made off for a run which was never in the offing to find himself out of his ground and run out.

With the strike rate at a meagre three runs an over and Ormskirk with 5 wickets down the omens were ominous...

Next to join Gary Knight was Scott Lees but this was another partnership that was not to prosper. First, Lees (8) lost his wicket to a catch and then Knight (38) went back to the pavilion also losing his wicket to a catch. Knight’s dismissal left the score on 95-7.

A spirited twenty-eight run partnership between Nicky Caunce and Josh Thompson took the score along to 123 when the 8th wicket fell as Thompson (20) was bowled by ex- Ormskirk player Ryan Maddock.

It was now a question of whether Ormskirk could bat-out the remaining overs to give their bowlers a reasonable target to defend. It was not to be. The last two wickets of Ed Brown (0) and Nicky Caunce (19) fell, to leave a final total of 133 off 41.5 overs.

The Ormskirk bowlers faced the daunting task to defend a small total against a strong Northern batting line up needing to score at a rate of just three runs an over. It proved to be too big an ask.

With 12 overs and 8 wickets in hand, the Northern batsmen cruised to reach the required total, and polished off the game with opener Liam Grey on an undefeated 53, Taylor Cornell (32), James Cole (8) and Andrew Clarke (15*). The two wicket takers for Ormskirk were Scott Lees (1-29) and Ed Brown (1-35).

It was a very disappointing end to what has been, in every respect, a very disappointing season.
