Community news is the lifeblood of any local paper.
While we can all get our regional, national and international news from a variety of sources, finding out what happened at your local parish council meeting (unless it's in Handforth) will not make the pages of the Echo, Daily Mail, Granada Reports or BBC news.
Or for that matter the Advertiser or Champion sadly; both publications are under the cosh as the spiralling cost of newsprint means much thinner papers and the rising cost of fuel meaning the bottom line is that reporters don't report like they used to but rely on press releases (often promoting just one side of the story, especially relating to local councils and police), FB posts and the like to fill a paper.
Long gone are the days when papers had enough journalists so they could enjoy an afternoon out of the office meeting contacts and news gathering; for me that meant Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays out and about in the northern parishes, Croston, Bretherton and Mawdesley, Up Holland, Crawford, Parbold and Dalton respectively with my K reg. Austin 1300 piling on the miles...
Yesterday afternoon I was doing exactly the same, visiting three separate events in Burscough, Lathom and Bickerstaffe in an Isuzu D Max which arrived on Friday for a week's test driving (specifically for visiting the national police fleet show in Telford on Tuesday). I also picked up a great Lathom story after 'trespassing' behind the huge Asda warehouse - watch this space!
And you can always send your community news to the busy QLocal news desk like many do on a regular basis. With no restriction on size, no expensive overheads and coverage 24/7 it's no wonder we're gaining more and more readers every week!
