Remember a famous US hamburger advert back in the ‘80’s poking fun at McDonalds?

It starred three little old ladies whose catchphrase for Wendy’s was: “Where’s the beef?’

They were shocked to see such a big bun and such a little patty; watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnCajZth-24

And what was I thinking after reading this week’s Champ?

You got it; ‘where’s the news?’

Its upbeat front-page editorial could have been written by Boris Johnson and I loved the faux pas with Jim Sharpe – his dog was called Tina wasn’t it, not Jim?

But my biggest ‘beef’ was the paucity of real local news inside. It’s known in the trade as ‘unique local content’ and believe it or not reporters are employed to actually find news to report, not simply sit in an office and regurgitate press releases from police, council and community groups (and perhaps redraft a few readers’ letters into stories.)

    Why?

Because there’s always two sides to every story and despite having plenty of reporters and days to plan a comeback, it was the 'same old, same old' with multiple press releases purporting as reports by various ‘reporters’ (cheek!) and one P12 story begging to be followed up – the new Anwyl Homes development in Burscough that just might result in councillors seeing sense and holding off making a final decision before taking into consideration public concerns.

The only good thing about the paper is that it’s free; it’ll be interesting to see how many advertisers stay loyal (especially now they know how cost effective a good FB page can be to promote a business.)

I learnt a salutary lesson back in 1978 when the NUJ called a national pay strike. I was on the picket line for a few weeks before the novelty wore off and found ‘furlough’ work in a Tarleton glasshouse.

It was galling to see editor Derek Appleton and some tame advertising staff bring out a broadsheet paper week after week single handed; Derek simply filled it with multiple press releases. Sadder still, the readers probably didn’t see anything different - something which could never happen today.

Right now, many local weekly papers are on the brink and while the Champ’s still managing to pull it off, perhaps the only question is, on the basis of its comeback edition, ‘for how long?’

And don't get me started on The Advertiser....

at least they don’t feature pathetic blog style posts tearing apart other journalists whilst trying to pass personal opinion off as “local news”.

“don’t get me started on the Advertiser”? Don’t worry Rog, nobody will because nobody is interested. Stick to reporting actual news on your news website.
