Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce who studied teacher training at Edge Hill in the sixties has been awarded a knighthood for his services to drama and charity in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
At last year’s Oscars, he received a nomination for playing Pope Francis in The Two Popes, and is set to play Prince Phillip in the final two seasons of The Crown.
Pryce had a successful stage career before his first big film role in 'Brazil' in 1985, directed by Terry Gilliam. He has also appeared in the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and in Evita. The 74-year-old was Cardinal Wolsey in the BBC’s dramatization of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and was High Sparrow in Game of Thrones.
Following his knighthood, he said: “That the UK continues to honour those that work in the arts, acknowledges the great contribution artists make to the way we live our lives.
“The arts remind people to be kinder, more understanding, questioning and to be more empathetic.”
Pryce returned to Edge Hill in 2010 to mark the University’s 125th anniversary and told the uni's Alumni publication at the time: “When I was at Edge Hill it was so much smaller, you pretty much knew everybody by name.
“I don’t think you could say that now, although it does still have that sense of community and friendliness about it. That’s hasn’t changed.
“I had a great social life and I remember laughing a lot. I was involved in one of Edge Hill’s first ever Rag weeks, which was basically a lot of dressing up.
"We hardly ever went off campus for a night out. The bar was the centre of college life, another thing that maybe hasn’t changed so much!”
