A two car crash led to four hours of traffic chaos in Ormskirk today.

And visitors to the popular Southport Air Show were 'grounded', brought down to earth with a bump as drivers were sent on lengthy diversions around the town.

The drama began at around 10.20am when a Skoda Fabia driven by a pensioner and Proton which ended up hitting the front of a house on Halsall Lane crashed at the busy County Road junction; the elderly driver of the Skoda was airlifted to hospital with chest injuries by the NW Air Ambulance which landed in the corner of the County Road sports field nearby. The Proton Satria driver was carefully brought out of his car after the roof was taken off by Ormskirk fire officers.

Lancashire Constabulary tweeted the incident by mid morning and both Radio 2 and Radio Lancashire headlined the crash which caused long delays for local traffic.

County Road was eerily calm up until around 2.30 when roads began to re-open and by 4pm officers were having a de-brief outside the Anukha Indian takeaway; one traffic cop based in Skem said that the busy County Road junction was one of the worst in the area for crashes and near misses.

QLocal will have a full update on the incident once the Constabulary PR office opens at 8am on Monday.
