Statement received this afternoon from the borough council PR office:
'Work has begun on a scheme to help make Wheatsheaf Walk in Ormskirk more attractive to visitors and shoppers.
The scheme will transform Wheatsheaf Walk into a really attractive space for people visiting the town centre and support local businesses to recover and thrive as COVID restrictions are eased.
The works will include laying new paving and seating as well as installing new lighting and removing planters and the pagoda, helping to make the shops more visible to people coming to the area.
We are also looking to enhance the appearance of the Wheatsheaf stone motif as an important recognition of its history.
The works began on 10 May and are expected to last about 10 weeks.
We are helping businesses in Wheatsheaf Walk and Burscough Street by working with our contractors to ensure the shops can stay open while the work is carried out.
The completion of the works has been made possible due to a grant from Historic England of £149,000.
The total cost of the works is £178,233, of which West Lancashire Borough Council is contributing the remainder.'
