QLocal is delighted to post this amazing story sent in by very good friend of the website, Burscough's Michael Dawson.

    'Hi Roger,

Something a little different, maybe you can post it as a story.

It's regarding a couple of photos of a very unusual flying machine that were brought into the recent 'Images of Burscough' exhibition by Paul Mackenzie.

Many of the visitors brought along their old photos and slides which I was able to copy on the day, and these show a very strange flying machine from the mid 1960s on Burscough’s former Royal Naval Air Station, HMS Ringtail.

Back in 2012 I interviewed local man Tony Thompson regarding his time at HMS Ringtail during WW2 - Tony was originally from London but after the war he moved back to Burscough around 1955.

He said: “On visiting the old aerodrome again, there was this fella on a bicycle with wings attached cycling like mad on the runway trying to take off, and he was at it for months. I used to go up there many a time and watch him, he was there giving it everything with these wings on and with just human power. I don’t know what ever happened to him, he suddenly disappeared and I never saw him again.”

I would love to know if anybody reading this, remembers the young man with his flying machine all those years ago, maybe he is even reading this article himself!

If anyone can shed any light on this 50 year mystery then please contact me via wilsonmiley@live.co.uk or mobile 07795578025.'

For car anoraks, AFV 524B is a Morris 1100 - according to the gov.uk MOT check website, it looks like it's now scrapped.
