Working for Poppies is good for your health.

Really?

Well according to 42-year-old Angela Jackson it is!

She started work for Poppies (West Lancashire) in December 2016 and has lost an amazing 6 stones in weight working as a cleaner for the Burscough St. company.

Angela, from School Lane, Old Skelmersdale, takes up the story: “I had taken maternity leave from my job in accounts at Matalan to have a baby and when my son started school, I helped out there. I wanted to go back part time with Matalan but that wasn’t an option so I took voluntary redundancy.”

Always keen to do something Angela signed up for Jobseekers.

“I saw the advert for Poppies and rang up. Manager Carole Swanton offered me an interview and I got the job. I started in December 2016 and have built up my jobs since.

"I found it nerve racking at the start, going into people’s houses, but soon got used to it and have love talking to people and have made a lot of friends.

"I was actually ill after week one as it was a shock to my body but Poppies stuck with me and I am grateful for that.”

Over the coming weeks and months Angela started to feel better about herself adding: “I was big when I first started but soon the weight seemed to start dropping off. I wasn’t picking at biscuits and snacks as I had done at home and had a good exercise and eating routine.”

Comparing it to going to a gym to keep fit Angela said: “I hate going to a gym. There is no real end result compared to cleaning a house and standing back satisfied thinking ‘I did that’. As I lost weight I found I had more energy and even at the weekends I need to do something exercise wise.”

And would Angela refer Poppies to her friends?

“Most certainly,” she said, “I look forward to going to work, it gives me a purpose and I believe if the opportunity hadn’t come around, I would have sunk into depression. I am doing my bit; I don’t rely on handouts and am earning my own money which really makes me feel good.”

Chris Wootton of Poppies West Lancashire told QLocal this afternoon: "Angela has made an awesome addition to our team over the past two and a half years.

"We think she’s great as do all of our clients with whom she has worked.”

She has clearly good willpower. I really respect people who find time for themselves.
