Discussed on Monday night at the new classic car meet at the Heaton's Bridge, Scarisbrick:

Low tyre pressure could result in a £10,000 fine

Your tyres will lose pressure faster in cold weather, and according to the highway code penalty table, you may receive a fine of £2,500 and land three points for careless driving. It would mean that if you're discovered driving your car in a dangerous condition by allowing your tyres to fall beneath pressure regulations and legal tread depth rules, you may receive a fine for each tyre that fails.
"In the winter months, you should check your tyre pressure once a week, or you could face a hefty fine. If all four tyres fail, you could be looking at a £10,000 fine and 12 points on your licence."

A snowy registration plate can cost you £1,000 in fines
You probably already know that you can land a fine if you fail to remove snow and ice from your roof and windscreen, but you need to clear your reg plate, too, or you could see up to £1,000 in fines. A concealed plate, whether covered in snow or dirt and grit from the road, is viewed as obstructing the police as they use your plate to check if your car is taxed and insured and has a valid MOT.

Careless driving on icy roads could cost £2,500

Careless driving isn't simply defined as using your phone or drifting into adjacent lanes; it may also be simple mistakes generated by icy conditions. If you follow a car too closely, drive too fast (even within the limit) or take a corner too quickly, these may be viewed as hazardous examples of careless driving when icy roads impact braking times and handling.

Wearing snow boots? Risk a £100 fine and points on your licence
It may be useful to pack a pair of warm boots with decent tread when you're navigating snow and ice, but avoid wearing them while you're driving. Highway Code 97 states you must ensure 'clothing and footwear do not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner'. Violating this code can result in a £100 fine and three points on your licence; however, it's more likely you'll land a warning or be offered an educational driving seminar.

Driving through puddles could end up costing £5,000
You should be wary when driving through slush and puddles; according to the Road Traffic Act 1988, if you drive through a large puddle and splash a pedestrian, you may receive a £100 fine or even up to £5,000 if the matter is taken to court by the pedestrian.
